Amorgos

Amorgos is one of the Greek islands of the Aegean Sea and it belongs to the Cyclades islands group.  It is the ideal destination for a holiday or a short break. A fantastic range of places and things to see and do are there to be explored.

 Its beauty inspired the filmmaker Luc Besson to shoot scenes of the movie “Le Grand bleu”,  in the beach of Agia Anna, which made the island famous all over the world.

Travel from Athens to Amorgos

The island is connected with the port of Piraeus with ferry boats. The two ports in Amorgos where the ferries come in are Katapola and Aegiali.

Another alternative way to travel Amorgos  is by air via Naxos, Paros and Mykonos and from there with the local boat lines.

Beaches

The island boasts scenic bays, underwater caves ideal for diving and golden beaches. The most popular beaches are Katapola beach and Aegiali beach, but the island’s highlight is Agia Anna beach where the film “Big Blue” was shot.

Katapola Beach

 Katapola beach is located in the middle of Amorgos Island. The holidaymaker can relief from the touch of the sun,  enjoying the natural shade of tamarisk trees  as well as  and the soft sand which amazes tourists. Also sailing boats moor in the harbor of Katapola, finding an ideal shelter here.

Aigiali Beach

Aegiali is the second most popular beach resort of Amorgos, after Katapola . It is a long beach covered with soft sand. The visitor here can find some beach cafes and snack bars. Also it is an ideal beach for families with young children.

Agia Anna Beach

The beach of Agia Anna is a very popular spot, owning to the fact  that the movie "Big Blue" was filmed here, but it isn’t organized at all. It is the ideal place for diving and snorkeling. The beach is pebbly, with rocks and caves and crystalline waters . On foot, in a few minutes you will also reach the nearby isolated coasts of Kambi (a nudist spot) and Sirma.

Of course there are and others  private beaches like Mourou beach, Plakes or Levrossos beach. The only thing you have to do is to explore them.

Accommodation

Amorgos offers all modern tourism facilities and hotel accommodation choices for all types of travellers. Chora, the capital of the island, and the two ports, Aegialis and Katapola, concentrate the majority of hotels  with panoramic sea view. In accordance with your preferences or budget you can choose from suites and rooms to camping sites while in other settlements and resorts you may find villas and studios ideal for families.

Sightseeing

Minoa

Right next to Katapola, you will meet the ruins of the ancient town “Minoa”, believed to have been named after King Minoa of Crete, as he is thought to have ruled in Amorgos too. Various findings and the ruins of a settlement prove that this was one important town hundreds years ago.

The Venetian Castle

It is situated on the rock above Chora and was built in the Medieval  times  for the protection of the island from the invasions. Naturally, the castle offers breathtaking views to the majestic scenery of the Aegean Sea.

The Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa

According to the tradition the reason for its construction was the image of Holy Mary found on the spot and is considered the saint protector of the island.

Monastery of St. Valsamitis

A beautiful monastery  surrounded by dense vegetation. Here, the spring with its long history and folklore still flows. The spring is known to have had miraculous healing properties during the pre-Christian times and its waters flow till nowadays in the middle of the monastery.

Festivals

Pasteli Celebration in Chora

Every year in the beginning of August in Chora, the Pasteli Feast is organized.

This festival takes place in Chora where traditional craftsmen with their assistants show the production of pasteli, which it is shared to the visitors. It is served on a lemon-tree leaf which enhances its distinctive taste. During the preparation, local music is played, followed by a feast with raki and dances till dawn..
