Poros” means “the pass way”, the sea passage, which is formed between two small islands, Sfairia and the Peloponnesian main land. This sea passage, originally caused by volcanic activity, is indeed an important feature, offering - apart from outstanding beauty - protection and safety. Beautiful, romantic Poros island has maintained its authenticity.

Poros town is a lovingly preserved historical little town with its buildings protected by cultural heritage laws. It's natural and architectural beauty has inspired a number of poets and writers. Poros' unique mixture of intellectual, urbane, and rural culture with its strong affinity for music and dance can be felt everywhere, whether strolling through the narrow paths of Poros town or simply relaxing in one of the many little cafes and bars that dot the seaside.

During each of the seasons Poros leads a different way of life. In summer, Poros town is bustling with life 24 hours a day. Getting together and watching the scene in the local open air bars and cafes is the favorite sport of summer. In spring and autumn the pace slows to its native, leisurely rhythm. During winter, Poros is a place for retreat: the perfect place to write, to withdraw from the routine of life, to meditate over new directions, or just to take time out. When you sit – let’s say - in the cozy living room of Terrace Apartment overlooking the bay of Poros, life becomes simple.

How to get there

The classic ferry boat, which transports passengers as well as vehicles, offers a romantic sea trip with intermediate stops at the ports of Aegina and Methana. The journey takes about 2,5 hours. The faster hydrofoil as well as the comfortable catamaran boat ride directly to Poros in about one hour’s time. Poros is connected with the island of Aegina and the Methana peninsula by ferry boat, as well as with Hydra and Spetses Island and the ports of Ermioni and Porto Cheli by hydrofoil boat.

This place was a sacred asylum for fugitives and castaways.5 kilometers towards the North there are the ruins of the Russian Dockyard. There in 1834 warehouses and bakeries were built for the supply of the Russian fleet sailing in the Aegean. The Russians kept this property until the 1900s. Since 1989, with a Ministerial decision, the Russian Dockyard has been announced as a historical monument due to its great architectural and historical interest.

The ancient Trizina

The ancient Trizina is known as the homeland of Thiseas and it is one of the most interesting places in Poros. All the archeological finds from ancient Trizina are located in the archeological Museum. Continuing your way, a distance of about 3 kilometer from Trizina there is a place called "Vasiliki Tafi"(The Royal cemetery). This area has great interest  because of the archaeological finds of the Mycenaean period.

Diavologefiro
