Naxos

Agios
Prokopios beach
Agios
Prokopios is the most famous beach on the island. It lies in a wind-protected
bay, and offers sunbeds and umbrellas. What impresses bathers about this beach
most is the fine, thin white sand.
Plaka beach
Plaka is an
organized beach with umbrellas and sun beds but also natural shade from trees close
to the water. It is considered one of the largest beach of the island and has fine
white sand.
Apollonas
beach
In the
homonymous village, lies this stunning beach. It is well protected from the
southerly wind and the visitor can enjoy the swimming as well as the
sunbathing.
Agia Anna
Beach
It is a
well-organized beach providing not only convenient facilities for the bathers,
but also has at its disposal taverns and coffee-shops for those who want to
taste fresh fish, local specialties as
well as a delicious snack or a cold refreshment.
St.Georgios
Agios
Georgios is very close to Chora. The golden sand and crystal water attracts a great number of visitors every
summer as it is very popular destination among the bathers. Also it is
organized with umbrellas and sunbeds.
Sightseeing
Portara
It lies
close to the port and it is the first thing that impresses visitors when they
arrive at island. The ruins of a temple which are dedicated to Apollon are
preserved around Portara.
Kastro
Kastro is situated
in Chora and consists of four floors. It
is the only tower in Naxos that has also a round tower attached to it.

The island
of Naxos delights visitors with its museums:
*The Archaeological
Museum exhibits findings from the excavations of the island. The collection
includes objects of everyday use, Cycladic statues, gold jewelry, marble and
clay pots, wooden tools and many others items.
*Apiranthos’
Archaeological Museum includes findings
from excavations of the region.
*The Geological
Museum is a place that has at its disposal a collection of rare exhibits such
as samples of minerals, rocks, metals
and relics.
*The Natural
History Museum has two different rooms. The
first one includes things that concern the world of sea such as clams and the
other exhibits samples of Naxos’ fauna.
Events
Naxian
potatoes have become very popular all over Greece. Hence, the Potatoe’s
Festival takes place at the end of
July in Agia Anna. The residents of the region cook potatoes in
various ways and offer to visitors. Traditional music, dance as well as wine accompany
the feast.
Religious
feasts
The
residents of Naxos celebrate Agios Nikodeimos who is considered the patron
saint of it. Celebrations take place mainly in Chora and after the church
ceremony a lively feast with food and drinks impresses visitors.
Local
products
*The island
of Naxos produces a unique delicious liqueur “kitron”. This aperitif comes from
an exotic fruit called kitron.
*According
to myths and legends, Dionysus the God of wine, loved the island of Naxos.
Therefore, he made the island fertile with plenty of vineyards. The quality of
local wine is extremely good.
*Graviera
is a mouth-watering local cheese that can be eaten in various ways.
